My research focuses on attaching drugs to metal surfaces using self-assembled monolayers (SAM), with the intent of modifying metal implants for site-specific drug delivery. The cartoon below suggests what the ultimate form of this molecular layer might be, as a thiolate bond holds the SAM to a metal implant, while the drug is attached through an ester bond. Cleavage of the ester bond will result in the liberation of drug into the tissue at the site of implantation.
